The Famous Whistler House Museum Of Art

The Whistler House Museum of Art, the birthplace of painter and etcher James McNeill Whistler, is in Lowell, Massachusetts. The museum is closed on Tuesdays and open to the public on other days between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. when it hosts exhibitions by artist members and works from the museum collection.

The bottom two floors of the house now contain the WHMA’s Permanent collection, including a room solely for James McNeil Whistler’s etchings. The top floor is an art studio that functions as it did when artists first inhabited it. In the back of the home rests the Parker Gallery, where new exhibits are hung.

In 1816, the Whistler House Museum Of Art was founded by Whistler. Whistler was a collector and philanthropist. He donated his collection of paintings, sculptures, prints, and photographs to the museum. The museum also has a research library and archives.
