Lowell is a city in Massachusetts, in the United States. With Cambridge, Lowell is one of two traditional seats of Middlesex County. Lowell is located approximately 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Boston in the heart of the Merrimack River valley, directly north of Chelmsford and Westford. The city is also part of a smaller Massachusetts statistical area called Greater Lowell, as well as New England’s 6th-largest metropolitan area by population. Lowell was named after Francis Cabot Lowell, a local figure in the Industrial Revolution. The city became known as the cradle of the American Industrial Revolution, due to a large series of textile mills and factories that were established in the early 19th century. Many of Lowell’s historic manufacturing sites were later preserved by the National Park Service to create Lowell National Historical Park.  Lowell is home to two higher education institutions: the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Middlesex Community College. As Lowell’s population grew, it acquired land from neighboring towns, and diversified into a city with several neighborhoods, including the Acre (which had a large Irish immigrant population in the 19th century), Belvidere (home to many French-Canadian immigrants), Centralville (a largely Portuguese neighborhood), Downtown, East End, Highlands, Pawtucketville (home to many Irish and Quebecois immigrants in the late 19th century) and South Lowell.
